I have a pet peeve in business… I find it annoying when organizations do not pay attention to who is driving their product strategy. This presents a serious risk to any business.
A lot of orgs tend to glorify IT heads or leads and depend on them to drive product strategy which is a big no no. The fact that they know how to build things does not mean they know where to go next. Some others land in the role without anyone truly paying attention to the significant shift that occurred.
Where you go next with your product as an organization cannot and should not be underrated. Oh the pride and incompetence I have seen from having misfits in that role… it’s damaging to say the list. Not to talk of the financial loss that occurs from developing features and new products that go nowhere. I truly could go on about this but I won’t because you get the gist.
It is imperative that your fill that role with someone that has experience in truly driving product strategy. It requires mastering the fine art of balancing, market, sales and customer feedback amongst others things.
As an organization, you must be on purpose and intentional about hiring the right fit to drive your product strategy.
