I have so many sweet memories of my 3 year old twirling around and playing with her little musical toy in my office while I worked on the first point of sale prototype. She inspired our audio navigated point of sale design for informal merchants in Africa that we launched in market.
My vision was sketched out on a piece of printer paper that I scanned and sent to our developers for our meeting. My goal was to sell them on the vision. I knew they could develop what was required but I needed them to do more than just write code. I needed them to get the vision of what we were about to accomplish. They went places with our product that I had not even thought about because they bought into the vision.
Your vision as an organization must be vibrant and active in the mind of every employee. It could mean the difference between launching a functional flat product into the market and launching an amazing solution that lights up the market. From an employee perspective, the power of knowing that you are part of something meaningful and bigger than what you alone can accomplish must never be underestimated.
Take the time to paint the bigger picture and leave no employee out. Help them buy in and watch the fireworks.
